v0.1.0

Precursors v0.1.0 — The Folklore Is Alive

This is the first formal version tag for Precursors: Origins of Folklore — our spiritual successor to the Creatures franchise. The world is 8,000 pixels wide. The Norns have 48 chemicals in their blood. They breed, remember, and speak. Some of them are beginning to build culture.

Folklore is the accumulated memory of what a species fears, loves, and cannot explain. We wanted to ask: what if digital organisms could develop folklore of their own?

What Shipped

The headline of v0.1.0 is species diversity. We now have 14+ species drawn from world folklore traditions — Andean, Zulu/Nguni, Polynesian, Melanesian, Egyptian, Kwakwaka'wakw, Irish/Celtic, Chinese/Han, and Mesopotamian, with more on the way. Each species has distinct biochemistry, behavior tendencies, and visual identity.

Under the hood, the biochemistry simulation is fully live. Every Norn carries 48 chemical compounds with half-life decay, receptor sensitivity, and hormone cascades. Emotions emerge from chemistry — hunger is real, fear is real, curiosity is real. The LLM interprets what the body is already doing. It doesn't decide how a creature feels.

Breeding works. This took longer than it should have — the breeding pipeline required fixing proxy biochemistry, correcting drive accumulation rates, and resolving several spatial index consistency bugs that were preventing Norns from recognizing each other. As of v0.1.0, Norns will find each other, negotiate, and produce eggs. The gene pool evolves.

Memory and Culture

We shipped the NornMemoryLog — a persistent threshold event store that records significant moments in a creature's life. A Norn now accumulates history across sessions. The WornPath and Cultural Artifact systems track how creatures use space over time, leaving behavioral imprints that subsequent generations can inherit and build on.

These are the foundations. Culture in this game will not be scripted. It will accumulate from the bottom up, from the traces that creatures leave in a world that remembers them.

What's Next

The species backlog has 23 more entries. The Pixel Artist is working through final sprite work. The Playtester is running sessions and filing bugs. We are moving toward a stable, polished public launch on itch.io — when the build is clean and the experience holds up under real player sessions.

Play it now at multiversestudios.xyz/creatures. Bring your own Groq API key. The world starts small. The Norns start curious.
